The Mitchell Report

The Mitchell Report....

Have you heard about it?

It is a report the came out Thursday about the widespread use of steroids in Major League Baseball (MLB).

Disturbing news to say the least...

What bothers me and hopefully you as an athlete or parent is that it is not only in MLB. Unless you hibernate you are well aware that this happens in high school and college sports as well. I have many friends who coach at the high school level and are well aware their athlete's use them to get ready for the season. I also have too many friends who played college level sports and laugh about steroid use. 'Everyone takes them. Even the girls' is a comment from one buddy of mine.

They are aware of this, but do NOTHING about it.

Why?

Because it makes THEM look better when the kids are big and strong. It makes THEM look better if they start winning...What I am saying is, it has NOTHING to do with the athlete when it comes to coaches either knowing or promoting the use of performance enhancemnet drugs.

As an athlete or parent I beg you to report ANYONE who suggests steroid use or any other illegal performance enhancement supplement(many are not permitted by your state athletic committees)

Report them immediately. Let them sit in jail and think about their actions. The use of steroids can lead to depression, in many cases suicide and aggressive behavior which in turn can lead to murder.

Some of this may sound harsh, but it is a horrible reality that is part of our young athlete's lives and you or a loved one needs to know about the reality of steroid use in athletics.

Thank you for your time and talk to your friends and loved ones TODAY about steroid use.

We Can Make A Difference

We live in a strange time when it comes to sports. All too often when you turn on ESPN to get the latest sports news you are instead bombarded with the latest arrest reports and jail sentences for today’s athletes, not to mention all the talk of steroid usage. It’s a real shame, especially for our young people. There was a time when professional athletes were the heroes in our society. Those days are long gone and the heroes are few and far between. I fully understand that a professional athlete is paid to play the sport well and not to be someone for us to look up to, but still, it is nice when it happens.

All of this being said; I know that sports can be a wonderful thing. I’ve been an athlete, I’ve coached athletes and now I have the absolute pleasure of training athletes. This last year has been incredible. I’ve trained literally hundreds of volleyball players, college and high school level, and I’ve met incredible athletes and parents. I never knew that my training would lead me to volleyball but I’m so thankful that it has. It is by far the most positive athletic environment I’ve ever been involved with.

So I ask all of the athletes that I have the pleasure of coming into contact with and all the others reading this to keep up the good work. I ask you to keep the true spirit of sports alive with teamwork, focus, a good work ethic and good sportsmanship. At least in our own communities, we can make sports good again.

Training - It's ALL about the sport

Volleyball is a great sport. It is one of the sports that young athletes can enjoy and continue playing throughout their entire lives. Both young and old volleyball players can see great improvements in their game with sports specific exercises.

Volleyball is a very explosive sport that requires unique strengths. Each position puts a specific demand on the body. To prepare your body for those demands you need to train it for those demands. That is the concept behind sports specific training. This type of training puts the body through drills that mimic game situations and enhance volleyball specific needs for strength, as with the serve or kills, or flexibility and agility, as with digs and jumping skills for playing the net.

The problem with the coaching and training that goes on in many schools and colleges is the 'one size fits all' training method; lifting in the gym and running. These generic routines do very little to help you on the volleyball court. Think about the bench press for instance, an exercise that many coaches have their volleyball players perform. A bench press is designed to build strength and size in the chest. That is all well and good but think about the game of volleyball and game situations that come up. Where would that move help? It would not.

Another reason that sport specific training is vital is that it trains the body as a whole, which is how it is used during a volleyball game. In other words there are no bicep curls or shoulder presses, instead the entire body is challenged in creative and effective ways to prepare it to handle the demands of the sport. There is also a great emphasis on core strength which is vitally important for stability, strength and balance. The core is the bodies powerhouse and where all movement begins and is the number one source of it's balance and strength.

Lastly, a solid sports specific training routine will greatly reduce the chance of injury to the athlete. This is because of the state of preparedness that exists in the body after training specifically for the sport that is being played.

If your volleyball training routine does not incorporate Volleyball Training Techniques than it is not complete and you are not reaching your potential. The body is an amazing thing and when trained properly it is capable of amazing things. Anyone can do sports specific training and frankly, most people prefer it over repetitive gym workouts. It is also a very effecient method of working out because the exercises are so incredibly effective.

Have a great day!

Volleyball - Oh Yeah!

Hello and welcome to my blog, 'Volleyball - Oh Yeah!'.

Why the title?

Well, after training a few volleyball players this past summer and attending quite a few games, I have come to love the game. What really attracted my to the game was not only the athleticism of the young athlete's, but the respect they have for their teammates and opponents. It would be great of all sports were this way.

Please stay posted for anything from nutrition and training tips to being and staying positive at all times. I urge you to comment and offer any advice to your fellow volleyball players.
You will be hearing about how one of my clients was her teams leading blocker as a college freshman middle blocker. Oh....she is ONLY 5'6"!

Volleyball - OH YEAH!!!!!

Also, please feel free to email me with what you would like to see in my blog spot, but keep one thing in mind....I SUCK AT VOLLEYBALL! lol
My training style is one of the best, but to teach volleyball technique...'Forget bout it!' :)

Stay tuned for some fun and exciting posts.

Thanks for stopping by :)
